Conclusion

The Conclusion summarizes the findings from the ten case studies. The translations caused by the widespread use of social media in the city are listed and connected to specific case studies. These include the shifting of activities within the city, the creation of temporary urban activity, the use of spatial metaphors on social media, the stimulation of social media activity in public space, the use of social media to stream live events, the use of social media as a real-time component of urban space, and the creation or extension of the local community through social media. Because of the difficulty of data gathering, a case is made for the need for a shared visual analytic interface to make social media data analytics available to a wider audience. Finally, the nature and limitations of social media are discussed including the interests of the corporations currently in control of social media.
