Software in Cyber-Physical Production Systems Challenges for implementation in the industry

To ensure the effective and efficient operation of Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPSs), software plays an increasingly important role. Tremendous progress has been made in recent years in the development of advanced software engineering methods. However, they do not seem to meet the current challenges of the industry, as they are not or only slowly reaching the industry. In this paper, the challenges for software engineering in CPPSs are discussed from the perspective of nine industry representatives from eight European companies of different sizes. To accompany the digital transformation process for futureproof production, perspectives for research were developed from the described challenges. The implementation of these goals is necessary considering economic, social, and sustainability requirements.
