Recent progress in electrocatalytic reduction of nitric oxide to ammonia

•The recent advancements in NORR on parameters, experimental systems, mechanism, and catalysts are summarized as a guidance for further investigations.•The NORR electrocatalysts are classified into metals and alloys, metal compounds, and non-metal materials to facilitate the understanding of various catalysts.•The strategies for improving the NORR activity are summerized to help the design of electrocatalysts for NORR.•The challenges and perspectives of NORR were proposed for future works.
