A brief introduction is provided to the terminology and methods involved in reconstructing the evolutionary history of marine mammals. The application of a phylogenetic framework to understanding patterns in the distribution of traits is exemplified by the evolution of locomotion in sirenians from quadrupedal movement on land to tail-based propulsion in water.
