Simultaneous removal of organic micropollutants and metals from water by a multifunctional β-cyclodextrin polymer-supported-polyaniline composite

•A novel PANI@PCDP media targeting both metals and organic micropollutants was developed.•Cr(VI) could be reduced to Cr(III) after being absorbed onto PANI@PCDP at pH 6.•The PANI@PCDP achieved the efficient removal of total Cr through the sequestration of Cr(III).•A broader range of emerging organic micropollutants can be removed using PANI@PCDP.•The PANI@PCDP maintained a high level of performance in surface water and wastewater.
