An S-Band Dual-Polarization Energy Selective Surface with Low-Cost Design

The electromagnetic energy selective surface (ESS) can be an effective filter for high-power microwave (HPM). In this paper, an ESS with metal patches, diodes and a cross-shaped floor operating in S-band which can greatly reduce the number of applied diodes is designed. The simulated results show that the insertion loss is less than 5 dB when it is in the wave-transparent state, and the shielding efficiency is more than 17 dB when it is in the shielding state at normal incidence. Moreover, with the advantages of dual polarization, low cost and good energy selection characteristics, it will have promising applications for the HPM protection of communication and radar systems.
