•Proposed an elastic perfect plastic constitutive approximation of rock mass.•Considering three-dimensional strength and strain-softening characteristics.•The forward analysis method of the equivalent Geological Strength Index (GSIeq).•The obtained excavation response agrees well with elastic strain softening model.
