•We use NATEM to develop/compare two net-zero pathways for Canada.•A workshop was organised to identify bottlenecks & inform the co-created scenario.•Stakeholders stressed the risk of CCS, & the potential of modal shifts/urban planning.•Stakeholder-based restrictions lead to early increase of electrification/renewables.•Net-zero remains achievable through a range of already available mitigation options.
