Active before passive tasks improve long-term visual learning in difficult-to-classify skin lesions

•Visual learning is essential in many domains, including medicine.•We experimentally investigated visual learning for the diagnosis of melanoma.•Active and passive tasks resulted in higher diagnostic accuracy when combined.•Furthermore, combining the tasks was more effective in the order active-passive.•Underlying learning mechanisms need further investigation.
