•A ground reliability test device of aviation hydraulic rotary joint is established.•The potential failure mode of aviation hydraulic rotary joints was analyzed.•The influence of the fit clearance variation on the reliability of aviation hydraulic rotary joints was analyzed.•The research results provide a reference for the maintenance and replacement of aviation hydraulic joints and have application value.
