Industrial networking is of increasing importance, for example, for emerging smart factory and smart grid environments. Low latency and real-time requirements together with high end-to-end reliability requirements pose unique challenges. Within this paper, we present TRUST, which provides layer 4 packet redundancy for UDP streams in order to improve end-to-end reliability without affecting latency or usability for real-time applications. The novel packet identification and deduplication technique of TRUST aims to avoid susceptibility to attacks, without requiring extensive cryptography capabilities or shared secrets among devices. We implemented TRUST as a Linux Kernel module and evaluated its memory usage and delay impact.
