•A correlation for pulsating flame speed consists of power-law growth and sinusoidal pulsation.•Stronger instability result in higher flame pulsation frequency, lower amplitude and smaller calculated cell size.•Self-acceleration in small laboratory explosions can be predictors of large atmospheric scale.
