Dual sourcing models with stock-out dependent substitution

•We model a dual sourcing problem motivated by practical examples.•A supplier has two sources that differ in lead time, quality and capacity.•We show that exact solution is analytically intractable.•We establish a relation with the other classical inventory problems.•This enables us to develop new heuristics that outperform all others.
