摘要
Knee Society members met in Park City, Utah, for the closed Members Meeting of The Knee Society on September 8 to September 10, 2022. A total of 94 papers were presented from Knee Society members throughout the globe. The latest information about topics such as appropriate patient selection, perioperative management, implant design, soft tissue balancing, robotics, infection, and perioperative complications was presented. These proceedings also include the 3 Knee Society Scientific Award papers presented at the Open Annual meeting at Specialty Day in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 7, 2023. These 3 papers were selected from over 40 studies submitted. The prestigious awards as follows are named after pioneers in knee surgery, Chitranjan S. Ranawat, MD, John N. Insall, MD, and Mark B. Coventry, MD, and are given for the best papers submitted. Submission for consideration of these prestigious awards is open to all authors from around the world performing research with a desire to understand and advance the field of total knee arthroplasty. The 2023 Ranawat award was given to the best paper highlighting surgical technique innovations and was awarded to Charles Lawrie, MD, and colleagues for their paper titled: “Tourniquet Use Does Not Impact Trajectory of Total Knee Arthroplasty Early Recovery: A Prospective, Randomized Controlled Trial.” This paper demonstrated that when using a smartphone-based patient engagement platform and a wrist-based wearable activity sensor to collect daily patient data, the use of a tourniquet had no significant negative impact on daily pain and function during the first 90 days after primary total knee arthroplasty. The 2023 Insall award was given to the paper titled: “Randomized Clinical Trial of Cementless Versus Cemented Tibial Components: Durable and Reliable at a Mean 10 Years,” from Matthew Abdel, MD and colleagues. This manuscript highlights that the use of cementless and partially cemented (hybrid) monoblock tibial components have excellent implant survivorship (96%) with no cases of aseptic tibial loosening at an average 10-year follow-up. The traditional cemented modular tibial group in this series demonstrated a 7% cumulative incidence of aseptic loosening. The 2023 Coventry Award was given to the paper titled: “Human Knee Has A Distinct Microbiome: Implications for Periprosthetic Joint Infection.” This paper was presented by Javad Parvizi, MD, representing his coauthors at the Members Meeting. This study showed the very interesting findings that distinct knee microbiome profiles can be detected in patients requiring various knee surgical procedures. The authors concluded that bacterial composition within synovial fluid may play a decisive role in the surgical and nonsurgical outcomes of the knee joint. In closing, we would like to thank all the reviewers, especially the Journal of Arthroplasty Elite Reviewers and members of the Knee Society who provided a quick turnaround on the reviews as they tremendously improved the quality of the papers in the proceedings. We would also like to thank the Knee Society’s Program Committee for their review of the award papers and all the presenters, authors, and coauthors of the Closed Knee Society meeting for getting the manuscripts in on-time for review. We also would like to thank the Knee Society staff (Olga Foley, Cynthia Diaz, and Jola Tricroce) for everything they do to make the organization successful with their educational endeavors. We personally would like to thank Michael A. Mont, MD, Editor-in-Chief, for all his tireless work and attention to detail that he provides for the Journal of Arthroplasty. Lastly, we would also like to thank the Journal of Arthroplasty staff, the Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, John J. Callaghan, MD, and the editorial and production team including Taylor Bowen and Steve Liu, as they worked behind the scenes organizing all of the reviews and reviewers in order to help us put together a robust proceedings to archive the meeting and provide timely scientific information to the arthroplasty community in the United States and throughout the world. We want to thank you as a reader for putting your trust in us as The Knee Society, as we aim to provide up-to-date and useful information you can use in your daily practice.
