Association between physical activity and global functioning in individuals with mental disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis

•People with mental disorders who are more physically active are also more likely to have better global functioning.•The association between physical activity and global functioning may be bidirectional, but the design of the included studies prevents us from drawing firm conclusions about the direction of the findings.•High-quality prospective studies are needed to explore the moderators of the association between global functioning and physical activity in this population.
