Currently available means to achieve personalized psychiatry

•In assessing and treating psychiatric disorders, numerous ‘biomarkers’, that is, specific individual features of each patient’s illness, history, and life, are currently not being obtained and utilized.•These data include details of serious mental illness presentation and course; other medical history; general health and habits; relevant family history; and social context of each patient.•Resources could be applied and available technologies could be implemented to gather and use these data to personalize psychiatric care.•Means to achieve such care, by supporting the clinician and improving the overall system, are discussed.•It is proposed that these changes are an imperative consistent with the goals of providing high-quality personalized care.
