•FeCr producers are only renumerated for the Cr content.•The Cr/Fe ratio of chromite can be altered by metalising and leaching Fe.•Chromite spinel was altered through oxidation, making Fe-oxide more reducible.•Cr/Fe ratio was upgraded from 1.57 to ∼23.4.•A desirable Cr/Fe ratio can be achieved while maintaining >90% Cr recovery.
