•PNFS strongly depressed dolomite but barely affected apatite in direct flotation.•PNFS simplified the flotation processes of silicon-calcareous phosphate ores.•PNFS chemically interacted with Ca and Mg atoms on dolomite via -SO3- groups.•PNFS exhibited excellent selectivity and environmental compatibility.
