•The early corrosion behaviours of lean-Cr content FeCrAl alloys in a simulated PWR environment was systematically investigated.•Oxide layer structure of the FeCrAl alloys underwent a transformation.•Cr is enriched on the surface of oxide particles to form FeCr2O4 spinel.
