•PST normative data was developed from healthy Japanese volunteers with MS.•PST scores of Japanese cohort significantly differed from matched US cohort from a published study.•Analyses based on US normative data may underestimate MS disease in Japan.•Use of culturally appropriate normative data may provide more accurate PST score.
