The Moderating Effect of Gender in the Relationship between Depression and Problem Drinking: A Partial Test of the Masculine Depression Framework

본 연구의 목적은 남성우울 프레임워크(Masculine Depression Framework)에 주목하여 우울이 문제음주에 미치는 영향에서 성차를 확인하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 한국복지패널에서 전국 17개 시도를 대상으로 표집한 16차년도(2021년) 자료에서 20세~64세에 해당하는 청장년 6,307명의 응답을 사용하였다. 먼저 문제음주에 대한 탐색적 요인분석 결과 2개 하위요인이 도출되어 알코올 소비량, 알코올 남용 및 의존으로 명명하고 각 요인에 대한 위계적 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 우울과 알코올 소비량의 관계에서는 성별의 조절효과가 나타나지 않았다. 둘째, 우울이 알코올 남용 및 의존에 미치는 정적인 영향에서 성별의 조절효과가 유의하였다. 단순기울기 검정 결과, 우울이 심화됨에 따라 알코올 남용 및 의존이 증가하는 기울기가 여성보다 남성에게서 더 큰 폭으로 상승하는 것을 확인하였다. 이러한 결과는 남성의 우울이 과도한 알코올 사용으로 인한 문제나 위험한 음주행동과 같은 외현화 증상으로 표현되는 경향이 여성에 비하여 높은 심리적 메커니즘을 설명하는 남성우울 프레임워크를 부분적으로 지지하였다. 또한 젠더를 고려한 관점에서 우울 증상을 완화하는 치료적 개입이 알코올 관련 문제를 해소하는 데 효과적일 수 있음을 보여주는 경험적 근거를 제공하였다. The purpose of this study is to verify the moderating effect of gender in the effect of depression on Problem Drinking based on the Masculine Depression Framework. In the 16th data sampled by the Korean Welfare Panel, the analysis was conducted using the response data of 6,307 people aged 20 to 64. First, exploratory factor analysis was conducted for Problem Drinking, which is a dependent variable. As a result, two factors were derived and named first, alcohol consumption, second, alcohol abuse/dependence, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted for each factor. As a result, there was no moderating effect of gender in the relationship between depression and alcohol consumption, but the moderating effect of gender was significant in the effect of depression on alcohol abuse/dependence, and as the level of depression intensified, alcohol abuse/dependence increased more in men than in women. These results partially support the Masculine Depression Framework in which men"s depressive symptoms are expressed as externalized symptoms, including alcohol dependence or dangerous drinking behavior, and provide empirical evidence showing that counseling and psychotherapy interventions to alleviate depressive symptoms can be effective in solving alcohol-related problems in men.
