•Modified polymer poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS).•Potassium chloride (KCl) doping improves the charge transfer ability of PEDOT:PSS.•KCl optimizes the energy level mismatch between PEDOT:PSS and perovskite layers.•KCl doping downshifts the energy level of PEDOT:PSS ∼ 0.22 eV.
