Skin conductance measurement as a selective and continuous pain assessment method during eye examinations for retinopathy of prematurity

•Newborn infants are exposed to many potentially painful procedures that should be treated adequately and assessed thoroughly.•Skin conductance measurements provide an objective and continuous method for pain assessment. This gives the possibility to define which parts of an investigation such as screening for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) generate painful response.•Even though pain management was instituted during the eye examinations for ROP, differentiated but stressful and painful responses were noted during all stages of the investigation, showing the need for continued improved pain management during this investigation.
