Effect of minimum inter-event time for rainfall event separation on rainfall properties and rainfall erosivity in a humid area of southern China

•MIT has an important effect on the properties of the generated rainfall events.•MIT changes the relationship between rainfall and eroded sediment.•E, I30 and EI30 of rainfall events increased as a power function with increasing MIT.•4 h is the most appropriate MIT criterion to divide rainfall events for soil erosion study.
