Gradation design and performance evaluation of modified asphalt mixture for bridge asphalt plug joint design

•A design method of asphalt mixture suitable for asphalt plug joints was proposed.•Asphalt mixture with lower void ratio, more fine aggregate, more mineral powder, and more asphalt was recommended to use for asphalt plug joints.•Polyacrylonitrile fibers contribute more to improving shear and tensile properties.
