•Effects of ionic surfactants on the activation of S2O82− by Fe2+ were evaluated.•S2O82− was not activated by CTAB and SDS surfactants.•In situ SO4−• based oxidation of acid orange 7 was inhibited in presence of ionic surfactants.•Exclusion and solubilization processes operate simultaneously.
