•Two sets of risk-based treatment targets have been developed for onsite water sources.•Both approaches use the same modeling framework yet differ in pathogen assumptions.•Despite these differences, resulting pathogen log-reduction targets are similar.•The comparison highlights transparency and adaptability of the risk-based approach.•Future research should focus on collection of pathogen data for onsite water sources.
