•Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate collector can recover 90 % bastnaesite between pH 3–10.•Neutral and weak alkaline conditions more favourable for bastnaesite flotation.•Pb ions promote bastnaesite collection and reduce amount of collector required.•Multilayer Pb2+–lauroyl sarcosinate adsorption enhances bastnaesite floatability.
