Utility of near-infrared fluorescence imaging with indocyanine green in resection of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma: A literature review and a case report

•ICG/NIRF can improve the identification rate of intraoperative minor lesions in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma.•ICG/NIRF can reduce a series of anastomose-related complications caused by poor anastomotic blood flow during operation in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma.•ICG/NIRF can improve the recognition rate of intraoperative lymph node dissection in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma.•The application of ICG/NIRF in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma surgery is safe and feasible, and can shorten the operation time, reduce the postoperative recurrence rate and complications.
