•Our multicenter cohort of children has provided a national overview of the impact of COVID-19 on child abuse.•The monthly incidence of abusive head trauma doubled during the months of COVID-19 lockdowns.•There is a major need for developing a national strategy to prevent pediatric physical abuse in this context.
