•Traffic data are retrieved from vehicle detection systems for the 2019 Kincade fire.•Relationships for speed, density and flow are benchmarked with routine traffic.•Evacuation speeds are lower than routine speeds in the low and high-density range.•Traffic models need to use updated relationships for wildfire scenarios.
