•Prevalence studies may deal with insomnia symptoms, syndrome, or disorder.•Younger adults had the highest rate of night and daytime symptoms.•Insomnia due to other diagnosed sleep disorders mostly involved older adults.•Inadequate opportunity for sleep, chronic pain or nocturia may explain insomnia.•Asymptomatic patients dependent on prescription drugs for sleep should be considered.
