Advances in metal organic framework (MOF) – Based membranes and adsorbents for lithium-ion extraction

•Compares the synthesis method, performance and separation mechanism of various MOF-based materials for Lithium-ion extraction.•These materials are categorized as MOF thin films membrane, MOF mixed-matrix membranes and MOF adsorbents based on their main synthesis method.•Functionalization of MOFs has been proved to increase the Lithium-ion selectivity in brine while its porosity contributes to the increase of Lithium-ion flux across the membrane.•Key challenges include practical design of MOF membranes with polymeric materials and MOF’s stability in liquid phases for industrial interests.
