•The averaged dry stem mass content (Csm) is defined.•The crop leaf dry matter content (Cm), height (Ch), and density (Cd) were considered.•Csm, Ch, and Cd improved vertically growing crop stem AGB (VGC-AGB) estimation.•The VGC-AGB = LAICm + CdChCsm did not saturate at medium-to-high crop covers.
