•954, 929–841 Ma igeneou rocks formed Precambrian basement of Songliao Block.•Songliao Block experienced a collision event before 954 Ma.•Advancing subduction occurred at 0.95–0.85 Ga along blocks in NE China.•Retreating subduction scince 0.85 Ga led to subsequent rifting of these blocks.•Blocks in NE China recorded assembly and breakup of Rodinia.
