Three segments sampling strategy for the assessment of liver steatosis using magnetic resonance imaging proton density fat fraction

•There was considerable heterogeneity in hepatic steatosis between each segment of the liver.•The variability of hepatic steatosis was significantly associated with volume-weighted fat fraction.•The mean value from segments V, VI, and IV could be used to estimate the volume-weighted fat fraction of the liver.
