An extensible multi-block layout warehouse routing optimization model

•Mathematical optimization formulations are proposed to deal with multi-block layout problems.•The scale and solution time of our models are independent of the number of cross aisles.•The distance between picking positions is divided into horizontal and vertical components, forming different terms in the objective function.•The model is extended to handle SPRP with scattered storage.
