Smartphones Reference Signal Received Power MDT Radio Measurement Statistical Analysis Reveals People Feelings during Music Events

A recent 3GPP standard feature called Minimization of Drive Test (MDT) enables huge collection of anonymous User Equipment (UE) radio measurements combined with GPS coordinates. This amount of georeferenced data empowers relevant radio coverage and quality analysis in live 4G LTE cellular Networks. In this article a further empowerment direction is explored overcoming basic radio access quality perspective to address new knowledge extractable from technical RSRP data about customer's feelings and attitudes during big events like music concerts. MDT data analysis and modelling was performed leveraging R Studio tool. Two specific types of concerts where investigated, the Vasco Rossi June 2018 Concert in Padova City and the August 2018 Sting & Shaggy Concert in Ascoli Piceno City. In both cases traces were found in RSRP data about the concerts different phases from people inflow, to concert start, to specific climax moments and finally to concert closing and related people outflow. Graphics showing the existence of correlations between RSRP processed data and concerts happenings were presented. This different RSRP data analysis perspective shows how analytics and modelling applied to massive MDT radio data can bring a new type of knowledge about population behaviour in many types of situations where citizens (and so smart phones) physically concentrate within a specific area. MDT data has been collected with Geosynthesis system.
