•CRF133_A6B and other URF_A6/B were discovered in Russia.•Novel A6/B recombinants were identified among PWID and their sexual partners.•Novel A6/B recombinants were composed of sub-subtype A6 and subtype B.•TMRCA of CRF133_A6/B sub-subtype A6 subregion was estimated around 2000.•TMRCA of CRF133_A6/B subtype B subregion was estimated around 2009.
