•Eco-friendly method to separate Fe-rich fraction from coal fly ashes.•Fe-rich fraction from coal fly ash replaces noble metals in reduction of nitrophenol.•NaOH washing lead to 46 times faster performance than non-treated counterpart.•High efficiency of Fe-rich coal fly ash was maintained during five recycling tests.
