Analytical model for predicting the lateral profiles of velocities through a partially vegetated channel

•An analytical model for predicting the lateral velocity profiles through a partially vegetated channel is proposed.•The model can predict velocity profiles in both the flow adjustment and the fully developed flow regions.•The new model estimates the critical frontal area at which Kelvin–Helmholtz vortices form along the canopy side edge.
