•The congested facility location problem with unreliable servers is modeled.•Queueing models with interruptions are used to analyze servers' status.•A problem-based B&B algorithm is designed to solve the problem exactly.•The B&B algorithm outperforms the BARON solver in solving different size instances.•The antlion optimization algorithm is proposed to solve large-sized problems.
