•A decision support approach for sentiment analysis of online reviews is developed.•A novel composite variable is devised to be utilized in text mining of reviews.•Considering various metrics, this text analytic methodology outperforms the literature.•The methodology is generic in that it can be applied to other sentiment analytics cases.
