摘要

•Vibro-impact tri-mass damper (VITM) is proposed as a novel impact-type control device.•Theoretical model of VITM is experimentally validated.•Vibro impacts in VITM greatly enhance energy dissipation and cause no adverse effects in primary structure.•VITM boasts high control effectiveness, strong robustness, and limited space demand.•VITM takes effect fast and is applicable to complex loading environments such as earthquakes.
