•Comprehensive microstructural mapping of the posterior and dorsal anterior human insula performed.•New areas Ig3, Ia1, Id2, Id3, Id4, Id5, Id6 identified and characterized.•Areas grouped into three superordinated cytoarchitectonic clusters.•Probabilistic cytoarchitectonic maps of 7 areas added to Julich-brain atlas.•Publicly available maps can be used to establish structure-function relationships.
