The cover feature illustrates how the chemical design of optotracers can be used to enable selective detection of the Gram-positive cocci Staphylococcus aureus in monocultures and when present in cultures mixed with the Gram-negative rod Salmonella Enteritidis. This is the first study to show that the chemical structure and photophysics of the optotracer molecules, which are conformation-sensitive fluorescent tracer molecules detecting peptide- and carbohydrate-based biopolymers, can be used as key tunable characteristics for the development of optotracers for selective detection of bacterial species.
