•Increase of propane conversion by shifting the equilibrium through RWGS over PtZn alloy.•The synergistic effect of PtZn alloy plays a key role on both PDH and RWGS.•A high catalytic activity with TOF of 1.82 × 104h−1 was obtained from PtZn alloy catalyst.•Insights into the mechanistic aspects of CO2-assisted PDH over PtZn alloy.
