•Vegetation phenology was analyzed in three representative iron mining areas of China.•A new method was developed to quantify the environmental impact of mining activity.•Mining activity impact on vegetation phenology decayed exponentially with distance.•Mining activity impact on vegetation was closely related to drought and topography.
