Submarine Landslides

Submarine landslides occur across all continental margins worldwide. They are diverse in nature and can involve tremendous volumes and long run-out distances. This paper provides an overview of the geographical extent and mechanisms of dense flowing submarine landslides. To this end, the review describes occurrence of past landslides, preconditioning and triggers, geophysical and geomechanical characterization, landslide dynamics, tsunami-genesis, and hazard analysis. Given the huge complexity submarine landslides encompass, an emphasis is here given on quantitative and methodological aspects such as landslide dynamics modeling and tsunami generation.
