Proteomics-based advancements in research toward sustainable production from dairy livestock

Livestock sector globally is growing leaps and bound. The contribution from livestock is multifarious and it is difficult to quantitate the benefits from different ramifications of livestock sector. Dairy industries, piggeries, poultry farming, beef industries, goat and sheep rearing, etc. have been progressing at speeds that have never been seen before. The dairy sector is the major contributor in GDP from livestock. The progress in dairy sector which needs to be sustainable is dependent on progress at several fronts. Research in Animal health and diseases, production and management system has played very significant role in past and warrants similar efforts in future as well. Proteomics being one of the advanced fields of research has contributed immensely in accelerating the production from dairy animals. In this chapter, the salient aspects of proteomics based research in dairy sector has been highlighted. It is hoped that readers will find a feel of current progress and future directions towards sustainable production.
